Effie Thanou                                          Staff attorney at HIAS Greece

Effie Thanou is a Greek lawyer, qualified to litigate before the Supreme Courts of Greece. She was born in Athens and graduated from the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She holds an LL.M. in Public Law and Political Science from the same University, and has been working as a lawyer since 2006, mainly in public and civil law. Since 2013, she has been engaged in the fields of human rights and migration, working in various positions: as a member of Asylum Appeals Committees and Naturalization Committees in Greece, as a special advisor to Greek Government bodies, and as a lawyer with NGOs in Athens and at the Greek borders. Her practice is focused on asylum procedures, inhumane living conditions, push-backs, the EU-Turkey Agreement, advocacy actions, and litigation at the Domestic and European Courts. Since August 2021, she has worked as a lawyer with HIAS Greece.
