Claire Breen is Professor of Law at Te Piringa Faculty of Law, University of Waikato, in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her research expertise lies in children’s rights, with the standard of the best interests of the child and age discrimination as key themes of her work. Her publications include The Standard of the Best Interests of the Child (Brill, 2002) and Age Discrimination and Children’s Rights (Brill, 2006). Her work on children’s rights has been published in leading academic journals, including Human Rights Quarterly, the International Journal of Children’s Rights, and the Harvard Human Rights Journal. Professor Breen, together with her University of Waikato colleague Professor Katrina Roen, is a Principal Investigator in a New Zealand Royal Society Te Apārangi Marsden Grant entitled Protecting Children's Bodily Integrity and Human Rights. This interdisciplinary research project aims to improve understanding of, and support for, the human rights of intersex people and to promote fairer, more informed healthcare and policy choices.
