    Athanasios Douzenis was born in Athens and studied at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina. He obtained a postgraduate degree (M.Med.Sci) at the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Sheffield and a PhD from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He received his specialization in Psychiatry in 1992 in Great Britain (London), where he also worked. He returned to Greece in 1995 and initially worked at OKANA (Organization Against Drugs), where he participated in the design and implementation of Substitution Programs until 2000. He was elected Lecturer in Forensic Psychiatry at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), later promoted to Assistant Professor (2005) and subsequently to Associate Professor (2012). In 2017 he was elected Full Professor of Psychiatry–Forensic Psychiatry. In 2019 his academic field changed to Psychiatry. He has been providing services at the 2nd Psychiatric Clinic of NKUA at Attikon University General Hospital since its establishment in 2000. From 2013 to 2019 he served as Director of this clinic. From 2017 to 2019 he served as President of the Psychiatry Specialty Committee, and the work of the committee led to the decision regarding the specialty of Psychiatry (Government Gazette No. 2745 / July 3, 2019). He is President of the Hellenic Forensic Psychiatry Association since its inception. He is the founder and director of the postgraduate program «Forensic Psychiatry» at the Medical School of the NKUA Medical School and the scientific coordinator of three NKUA e-learning programs. He has edited the publication of three books (Forensic Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry of Children and Adolescents, and Ethics and Deontology in Mental Health). He has written 48 chapters for Greek textbooks and 9 chapters for international publishers. He has 195 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, with an h-index of 32 in Scopus and 39 in Google Scholar, and 7980 citations. He is married and has three children.
